SJ Willis students and staff support the United Way of Greater Victoria!
Foods students in the Alt. Ed. program at SJ Willis raised $1000 for the United Way through lunchtime food sales. The spirit of giving is alive and well at SJ Willis Education Center.
A further $751.00 was raised from the proceeds of a staff silent auction.
The funds raised were presented to the United Way today after fundraising activities that took place all year long at SJ Willis.

Oak Bay's YES Awards

Congratulations Spectrum Concert Bands
The Spectrum Community School Concert Bands performed at the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival in Port Alberni on April 18, 2013. Both the Junior and Senior Concert Bands earned ratings of SUPERIOR-PLUS (Gold Medal Standing: all marks in Superior in 45 different categories). Both bands have received invitations to perform at the National Concert Band Festival in Toronto!

Students from View Royal Elementary School thank firefighters for saving the life of one of their own.
Students from View Royal Elementary School streamed up the hill and almost overwhelmed Fire Chief Paul Hurst on Wednesday. Students — bearing cards, decorated hearts and banners — came to thank him for saving their nine-year-old classmate, Katrina Van Winkle, from a fire on March 14, 2013.“This is the best day of my life. The highlight of my career. It doesn’t get much better than this,” said the fire chief, who ran into a burning house with firefighter Dave Sheriff to pull Katrina to safety. Katrina was lying unconscious in the hallway as the blaze raced through the Paddock Place home. She had inhaled smoke and chemicals to the point of cardiac arrest. Hurst saw Katrina’s leg and rushed into the house and dragged her out — even though he wasn’t wearing any equipment.
After being resuscitated on the lawn, Katrina was rushed to B.C. Children’s Hospital, where she made a rapid recovery.
When she heard the whole school was going to say thank you to the firefighters for saving her life, she wanted to go along. “She wasn’t scheduled to come back to school until tomorrow,” said educational assistant Jennifer Whitehouse. “We didn’t know if she would be ready for this, but she walked up to the fire hall with all of us and met her family up there.” At the fire hall, Katrina presented Hurst with a card saying: “Thank you for saving me. I am OK.”

Educational Assistant – Foundation Program
The Greater Victoria School District, in partnership with Camosun College, is excited to be offering a foundation program for those seeking employment as Educational Assistants with School District 61. This newly created part-time program commences in September 2013 and finishes in April 2014.
If you are interested in attending an information session, please submit your cover letter, current resume and any supporting documentation to hrs@sd61.bc.ca
An explanation of the selection criteria, employment opportunities as well as the program costs will be discussed at the information session. Staff from Special Education and Human Resources along with Camosun College representatives, will be in attendance to answer any questions that you may have.
For career prep, proof is in the pudding
With menu items like espresso-marinated pork tenderloin and a rack of lamb, it's clear there's something unique going on in Spectrum's cafeteria. It all stems from the school's culinary arts program, a one-year program that prepares students to work as professional chefs by having them prepare all meals served in the cafeteria, while learning the ins and outs of managing a kitchen.
Learning in a 21st Century Classroom means Reading and Writing are Fun
Sandra Jost is a teacher in the Greater Victoria School District and has had over 20 years of experience supporting the needs of her students with technology in the classroom. She uses strategies of Universal Design for Learning in her class to ensure that all of her students are able to access the curriculum.

age of 11 and 17 who attend public school in SD61 are welcome to audition.
