Safer School Travel a part of Safer City is a joint program undertaken by the District of Saanich, Saanich Police, Greater Victoria School District 61 and ICBC.
What is Safer School Travel?
- Web based program that provides a step by step process
- Result of program is a Safer School Travel plan including Best Walking Routes Map
- Focus is on 3 E’s – Engineering, Enforcement, Education
Why is Safer School Travel important?
- Existing processes don’t have the 3 E focus
- Create a living document with long and short term goals
- Children need independence and security that a Safer School Travel plan can encourage
Who participates in the program?
- School community takes lead role
- Safer City provides encouragement and technical support
- Key stakeholders – District of Saanich, School District
Where should the program be used?
- Schools where there are parents willing to support the initiative
- Schools where there is an identified need
- To every school in Saanich within the next 5 years
When can schools get started?
- Once they have created a committee that will work to support the SST program
- With summarized issues and supporting data, a stakeholder meeting and technical review will occur to define strategies for change.
